India Aviation Hub : New Delhi : Government has stepped up efforts to make India a major global hub for aerospace manufacturing and supply chain. Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal held an important meeting with Juergen Westermeyer, President and Managing Director of Airbus India and South Asia. The main objective of the discussion was to establish India as a global aviation hub by expanding India’s aviation capabilities and MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Operations).

Giving this information on the social media platform ‘X’, Union Minister Piyush Goyal said that the meeting was very fruitful. The meeting, an attractive destination for foreign companies, comes at a time when India is focusing on greater localization in the aerospace sector and aims to establish itself as a major global hub for aircraft and parts manufacturing. Additionally, aerospace companies around the world are diversifying their supply chains due to geopolitical considerations and are looking to India as a stable sourcing and manufacturing location.

A global opportunity for Indian suppliers: Airbus India chief

Westermeyer has previously expressed his positive view of the Indian supply chain. Earlier this year, he had welcomed the proposed framework of an Interim Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) between India and the US. Westermeier said the agreement is not only about reducing tariffs, but also about paving the way for Indian suppliers to expand globally.

According to him, such a framework would help foreign original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to diversify their sourcing strategies. This will help Indian suppliers better integrate with the global aerospace ecosystem. Aerospace manufacturing is a capital-intensive sector, where cost certainty and strategic stability are critical for sustainable growth.

This positive interaction between Piyush Goyal and Airbus leadership is a clear indication that India is poised to integrate more smoothly into the global aviation supply chain and strengthen its position as a global manufacturing hub.

The main agenda of this high level discussion included the following issues

  • Sourcing and Supply Chain: Strengthen sourcing of aviation components from India and significantly expand supply chain.
  • Manufacturing and MRO: Boosting the country’s aerospace manufacturing and improving MRO capabilities.
  • Skill Development: Deepening skill development activities tailored to the needs of the aviation sector.
