FIFA Lifts One-Game Bans for Otamendi and Caicedo Ahead of World Cup

FIFA has announced that Argentina's Nicolás Otamendi and Ecuador's Moisés Caicedo will not serve one-game suspensions during the upcoming World Cup, following their red cards in the last qualifying matches.
This decision, made on Friday, is part of an unprecedented amnesty on disciplinary actions from World Cup qualifiers, implemented by the FIFA Bureau, which includes FIFA President Gianni Infantino and the heads of the six continental soccer associations. FIFA's Rationale FIFA stated that the amnesty applies to single yellow cards and any pending one- or two-match suspensions, emphasizing its goal to allow teams to compete with their strongest lineups on the world stage. The organization noted, 'Single yellow cards and pending one- or two-match suspensions are not carried over to the final competition.'
Details of the Red Cards Both Otamendi and Caicedo received red cards during Ecuador's 1-0 victory over Argentina in September. Otamendi was shown a direct red for fouling a clear goal-scoring opportunity, while Caicedo received a second yellow card for a foul tackle. Consequently, their one-game bans will be enforced in a different competition after the World Cup. World Cup Schedule Argentina is set to defend its World Cup title against Algeria on June 16 in Kansas City. Otamendi, at 38 years old, may be participating in his final World Cup, having previously played in the tournaments of 2010, 2018, and 2022, where he was a key player throughout Argentina's campaign. Ecuador will kick off its World Cup journey against Ivory Coast on June 14 in Philadelphia. Caicedo, 24, also represented his country in Qatar four years ago.
Impact on Other Players The FIFA ruling also positively affects Qatar's Tarek Salman, who received a two-game ban after being sent off in a match against the United Arab Emirates. He will now be eligible to participate in Qatar's World Cup opener against Switzerland on June 13 at Levi's Stadium.
