Recently the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has released the figures for the year 2024. According to these data, the crime rate in the country was lower in 2024 as compared to 2023 and a total of 35.44 lakh criminal incidents took place in a year. Statistics of crimes against women show that crimes against women and children increased by 8 percent in one year. There was a slight decline in rape cases but on an average 107 rapes were recorded every day. Surprisingly, punishment could be given in only 24 percent of these cases.
In 2023, where 37.63 lakh criminal cases were registered and chargesheet was filed in 72.7 percent of the cases. Whereas, in 2024, a total of 35.44 lakh cases were registered and chargesheet was filed in 72.1 cases. In the year 2024, there was a 2.4 percent decrease in murder cases and a 15.4 percent decrease in kidnapping cases. NCRB data shows that in one year, 43,973 murder cases were investigated and 22,963 cases were investigated. The chargesheet rate is 84.7 per cent as it is calculated taking into account the total chargesheeted cases and the number of cases disposed of by the police.
Very few people got punishment in cases like rape
According to NCRB data, a total of 39274 rape cases were investigated in 2024 but charge sheets were filed only in 24,614 cases. Found guilty in a total of 5032 cases only. This means that trials have been completed in approximately 20 thousand cases and the rate of being found guilty is 24.4 percent. This means that about 75 percent of the accused in rape cases were acquitted.
Similarly, the conviction rate in kidnapping cases was 26.8 percent and the conviction rate in serious assault cases was only 29.6 percent. Only 43.8 percent of murder cases resulted in conviction and only 19.7 percent of riot cases resulted in conviction.
What is the situation in the states?
Rajasthan was in the worst condition in terms of total cases registered under section 376 of the IPC and section 64 to section 71 of the Indian Justice Code to rape. A total of 4871 cases of rape were reported in Radasthan in one year and a total of 4888 women filed rape complaints. In the country’s capital Delhi, 1058 cases of rape were reported i.e. on an average three cases were reported every day. At least only 7 cases were reported in Sikkim.
There were 1118 cases of rape in West Bengal, 3209 cases in UP, 3091 in Maharashtra, 3061 in Madhya Pradesh and 1391 cases of rape in Haryana.
