Uttar Pradesh government has ordered to convert all smart meters into postpaid mode. Now consumers will get the bill after consumption from June 2026. Besides, facility of 10 easy installments for old dues and special camp for complaints has also been provided.
Lucknow. Yogi Adityanath government of Uttar Pradesh has given big relief to the electricity consumers of the state. On the instructions of the Chief Minister, an order has now been issued to convert all the smart meters of the state from prepaid to postpaid mode. Energy Minister Arvind Kumar Sharma clarified that all the meters installed under the RDSS scheme will now work on postpaid system, which will provide the public the facility to use electricity first and pay the bill later.
Benefit of postpaid billing will be available from June 2026
Under the new system, consumers will receive the electricity consumption bill for May 2026 in June 2026. Keeping in mind the convenience of the general public, the government has decided to completely abolish the prepaid system. This order has been implemented with immediate effect in the entire state including Purvanchal, Madhyanchal, Dakshinanchal, Paschimanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam and Kesco Kanpur.
Electricity bill will be received on WhatsApp and SMS
The Energy Minister said that now consumers will not have to worry about bills. Smart postpaid bills will be sent via SMS and WhatsApp by 10th of every month. In areas where there is network problem, AMISP agencies will take manual reading and provide bills on time. Consumers will also be able to get their bill from 1912 helpline or WhatsApp chatbot.
Easy installment facility for payment of dues
The government has given special relief to those consumers whose bills are outstanding:
- Domestic consumers: Will be able to deposit the dues till April 30, 2026 in 10 easy installments.
- Other categories: For these, the facility of payment in three installments of 40%, 30% and 30% has been provided.
- Security Money: The security amount adjusted at the time of prepaid will now be added to the bills in four equal installments.
Extra time will be available for bill payment
After the implementation of the postpaid system, consumers will get 15 days from the date of bill issue to make payment. Even after this, a 'disconnection period' (grace) of 7 days will be given. If payment is not made within the stipulated time, late fee (Surge Charge) will be applicable as per rules. Now all new electricity connections in the state will also be given in smart postpaid mode.
Special camps will be organized to resolve complaints
To resolve the problems related to smart meters and billing, the government will organize special camps at Executive Engineer and Subdivision Officer offices across the state from May 15 to June 30, 2026. Consumers can also get quick resolution by registering their complaints on 1912 helpline.
