Smart Meters: A major change is set to take place tomorrow night—May 9th—for the hundreds of thousands of people in Uttar Pradesh currently using smart electricity meters. The Electricity Department will initiate the process of converting prepaid smart meters to a postpaid system. Consequently, the most pressing question on the minds of consumers—particularly those who have already topped up their meters—is: What will happen to their remaining balance once the prepaid smart meters are switched over to the postpaid system?
The Electricity Department has now clarified the entire situation regarding this matter. According to the department, consumers will not lose a single rupee. As soon as a meter switches from prepaid to postpaid mode, the remaining balance from the previous recharge will be automatically adjusted against the subsequent electricity bill. This means consumers will not need to undergo any separate procedure to claim their balance.
The bill will also clearly indicate the exact amount of the existing balance and how it has been adjusted. This will enable consumers to easily understand the complete financial breakdown.
**The Change Begins Tomorrow Night**
According to the Electricity Department, the process of converting smart prepaid meters to postpaid mode will commence across the state on the night of May 9th. The department asserts that this entire transition will be completed overnight, and by May 10th, all meters will be operational under the new system. Since this entire operation will be executed through technical means, consumers will not need to have their meters physically replaced or request a visit from department personnel.
**How Will the New System Work?**
Once the new system is implemented, smart meters will function exactly like traditional postpaid meters. According to the Electricity Department, electricity consumption will be calculated for the period spanning from the 1st to the 30th of each month. Subsequently, the bill will be dispatched via SMS and WhatsApp within the following 10 days. A welcome feature of this system is that consumers will be granted a 15-day window to pay their bills.
**The Hassle of Frequent Recharges Comes to an End**
Until now, consumers with prepaid meters were required to top up their accounts repeatedly. There was a constant fear of power disconnection whenever the balance ran out. However, with the introduction of the postpaid system, this inconvenience will cease to exist. Furthermore, consumers can look forward to relief from common grievances such as meters running too fast, balances being deducted without actual consumption, and the receipt of inflated bills.
Keeping Mobile Numbers Updated is Essential
The Electricity Department has appealed to consumers to keep their mobile numbers updated, as bills will be sent directly to their mobile phones. In the event that a bill is not received for any reason, it can also be accessed via a chatbot or online facilities.
