New Delhi: If you also book gas cylinder sitting at home, then this news is very important for you. Nowadays, cyber thugs have found a new and dangerous way to rob the general public. Scammers have now made the ‘Delivery Authentication Code’ (DAC) used for booking and delivery of LPG cylinders their weapon. A small carelessness and an OTP shared over the phone can completely drain your bank account.
How is the trap of fraud laid?
Actually, to stop black marketing of gas cylinders, the system has now become based on OTP. After booking the cylinder, a 6 digit DAC code comes on the customer’s mobile, which has to be given to the delivery boy at the time of receiving the cylinder. Scammers take advantage of this. They call pretending to be executives of the gas company and ask for the code from you by threatening to “confirm the booking” or “disconnect”. As soon as you tell the code, they gain access to your digital wallet or banking app and commit fraud.
Looting in the name of fake app and KYC
According to reports from Hyderabad and Rajasthan Police, the thugs have now become even more vicious. They send links to customers on WhatsApp to install fake LPG apps or APK files. Once this file is installed in the phone, the fraudsters take complete control of your phone and do UPI transactions without your knowledge. In many cases, withdrawal of up to Rs 4 lakh has been seen from the victims’ accounts.
Be careful in these three ways:
-
Atmosphere of fear: Scammers will say that your subsidy has been stopped or the connection will be closed if KYC is not updated.
-
Attractive Offers: You will be asked for secret codes by luring them with “early delivery” or “extra cylinder”.
-
Technical Trap: You will be sent a link that looks like a fake government website, where your banking details are stolen.
Follow these tips to keep yourself safe
Big companies like HPCL, IndianOil and BPCL have made it clear that none of their agents asks for OTP over the phone. To stay safe, keep these things in mind:
-
Give OTP at the door itself: Do not tell OTP to anyone until the delivery boy comes to your house with the cylinder.
-
