Smart Meter Working Mechanism and Technology: Recently, providing significant relief to electricity consumers, the Uttar Pradesh government decided to discontinue the smart prepaid meter system. Now, households currently equipped with prepaid smart meters will function under a postpaid system. For quite some time, there had been growing resentment among the public regarding smart meters. Consumers alleged that smart meters run faster than standard electricity meters, resulting in higher electricity bills. The government took this step in response to these complaints. However, the question now arises: is this truly the case?

Do Smart Meters Really Run Faster?
The most significant complaint regarding smart meters has been that they record units at a faster rate compared to standard meters. However, the Electricity Department has refuted these claims. Department officials state that smart meters record electricity consumption in the same manner as standard meters. They do not register any form of extra or erroneous readings.

According to officials, smart meters are equipped with a SIM card that transmits data directly to the central system. This eliminates the possibility of errors associated with manual meter reading or human error. The department further asserted that extensive testing has been conducted on numerous meters, and in these tests, the readings from smart meters were found to be identical to those of standard meters.

What Technology Powers Smart Meters?
Smart meters are equipped with modern and advanced technology. They record electricity consumption in real-time and transmit this information directly to both the consumer and the Electricity Department. These meters transfer data using radio frequency (RF) or cellular networks. Smart meters are capable of recording electricity consumption data every 15 minutes or every hour. Consumers can also monitor their household's electricity consumption via a dedicated mobile application. Furthermore, smart meters are considered instrumental in curbing electricity theft and ensuring accurate billing.
