The cricket world was left in total shock after the sudden demise of Amanpreet Singh Gill on Wednesday. The pacer was just 36 years old at the time of his passing. There are still no reports about the cause of his death. Gill had played a handful of games for the Indian Under-19 side with former skipper Virat Kohli and also a few games for his domestic side, Punjab.
Virat took to his X-handle and wrote, “Shocked and saddened to hear about Amanpreet Gill’s passing. Sending prayers and strength to his family and loved ones. Rest in peace. Om Shanti.” Many fans were left puzzled about the sudden development, and joined in giving condolences after Kohli’s tweet.
Legendary Indian cricketer, Yuvraj Singh, also posted a tweet which read: “Deeply saddened to hear about Amanpreet Singh Gill’s passing. Shared the dressing room in our early days, he was a quiet, hardworking cricketer who loved the game. My heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. Rest in peace.”
Cricket association share heartfelt tribute after
Punjab Cricket Association (PCA), for whom Amanpreet played a few games, remembered their former player via a heartfelt message on social media. The tweet read “Punjab Cricket Association deeply mourns the sad demise of Amanpreet Singh Gill, former Punjab cricketer and Member, Senior Selection Committee, Punjab.”
“He served Punjab cricket with dedication and passion, representing teams including India Under-19s, Kings XI Punjab and Punjab. Our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and loved ones.” In the same tweet, PCA also notified where the final rites were to take place.
Amanpreet Gill’s cricketing journey
Born on September 16th 1989, Gill made headlines for his seam bowling in the various age-rank levels. This earned him a spot in the Under-19 tours of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh that took place in 2007. In one of the Youth ODI’s against Sri Lanka, the pacer took 3/11, which included the wickets of future Lankan players like Kusal Perera, Angelo Perera, and Sachith Pathirana
The pacer played six first-class games for Punjab, incidentally making his debut and playing his final game both against Mumbai. His debut game saw him pick four wickets, which included the scalp of Rohit Sharma. In his final game, he picked two wickets, one of which was former India batter and Ranji legend Wasim Jaffer.
