India have recently won the T20 World Cup 2026, thus becoming the first team in history to win three trophies. Suryakumar Yadav led the team in that campaign, as he became the third Indian captain after Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni to lift the coveted trophy.
However, the star batter himself has been out of form for the past masny years, ever since he was made the permanent captain in 2024. Despite being the second-most successful T20 captain in Indian T20I history, with a win percentage of 76.92, he is set to be removed from the role. According to a report by The Times of India, Suryakumar Yadav is all set to be replaced as the captain of the Indian T20I side from the next T20I cycle immediately following IPL 2026, as the team management have run out of patience with his lean patch of form. Shreyas Iyer is the likely candidate to replace him as the new leader of the Indian team in the shortest format of the game. This will mean, that Iyer is set to return to the T20I playing XI for the first time in over 2 years. Shreyas Iyer will thus be appointed the captain for the two-Test match series against Ireland, which will be Team India's first assignment since the T20 World Cup 2026 win. This will be followed by a five-match T20I series in England.
