Fans of Ranveer Singh’s blockbuster spy thriller Dhurandhar 2 are eager to know when it will be released online, but the film is unlikely to stream before mid-May due to an ongoing court case over one of its songs. The movie has already completed seven weeks in cinemas and is one of the highest-grossing Indian films ever, so the curiosity around its digital release is very high.
Why is everyone talking about Dhurandhar 2’s OTT release?
The delay is linked to a copyright dispute in the Delhi High Court. Filmmaker Rajiv Rai, who directed and produced the 1989 film Tridev, has sued Jio Studios and B62 Studios, the makers of Dhurandhar 2. He alleges that the film’s song “Rang De Lal (Oye Oye)” / the recreated “Tirchi Topiwale” used elements of Tridev’s iconic track “Oye Oye Tirchi Topiwale” without proper authorisation. The remixed version, composed by Shashwat Sachdev, plays in the climax of Dhurandhar 2 and is part of its official soundtrack, which is why it has become the focus of the case. How has the Delhi HC responded so far?
Earlier, the court had sent both sides to mediation, hoping they would settle the dispute over royalties and rights out of court. That mediation has now failed, and the court has decided that the case will go to trial instead. The matter has been listed for further hearing, with one of the key dates mentioned as May 8 for the next round of arguments. During a recent hearing, Super Cassettes (T-Series), which holds the audio and music rights for Dhurandhar 2, opposed Rajiv Rai’s request for any interim stay that could block the film’s digital release. When is Dhurandhar 2 expected on OTT?
In court, the producers B62 Films informed the judge that, although the film is already in theatres, it is “unlikely to be released on any OTT platform before mid-May 2026.” This matches the usual 8–10 week theatrical window, as the film will complete eight weeks in cinemas on May 14. The first film in the franchise, Dhurandhar, is currently streaming on Netflix. The sequel Dhurandhar 2 is expected to stream on JioHotstar once the theatrical run and legal hurdles around the song are sorted, though an exact date has not yet been officially announced. What is Dhurandhar 2 box-office performance?
Directed by Aditya Dhar and produced by Jio Studios and B62 Studios, Dhurandhar 2 features Ranveer Singh in the lead, Akshaye Khanna, Arjun Rampal, R. Madhavan, Sanjay Dutt and Sara Arjun in key roles The two films in the franchise together have grossed over Rs 3,100 crore worldwide, with Dhurandhar 2 alone crossing around Rs 1,750-1,800 crore globally, making it one of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time and aiming to challenge the lifetime numbers of Baahubali 2 in the long run. So, for now, fans can expect Dhurandhar 2 to arrive on OTT only after mid-May, most likely on JioHotstar, once its theatrical window is done and the court case continues in the background.READ NEXT
