Upon returning home from school, Nibha would head straight to her grandfather's room. He adored her deeply, even more than life itself. As the only child of her parents, she had two uncles, one elder and one younger, with the elder having two sons.
From the outside, their family appeared to be quite prosperous and happy.
Nibha's mother was a sociable woman, well-known in their community for her kindness. The family was always involved in the joys and sorrows of those around them. Her grandfather had been a high-ranking government official and, after retirement, built a two-story house in the same city. Nibha's family lived with her father in this home.
A Sudden Change
One day, as Nibha returned from school, she rushed to her grandfather's room only to find it empty. Confused, she wondered where he could be. Her mother informed her that he had gone to visit her uncle. Nibha was upset that she hadn't been told about this beforehand.
Her mother replied, "I mentioned it this morning, but you must have forgotten in your rush to school." She then instructed Nibha to change and join her for dinner.
As time passed, Nibha began to forget about her grandfather amidst her school friends, yet a lingering sadness remained within her about his sudden departure without a word. Gradually, memories faded as time moved on.
Growing Up Without Him
Now eighteen, Nibha still remembers her grandfather on her birthday and tries to call him at her uncle's place. However, she always receives the same response: "He has gone for a walk; I will let him know you called." It has been eight years since she last spoke to him, yet he continued to write her letters every birthday, which her mother would bring to her.
Nibha cherished these letters, holding them close and crying as she remembered him. Her eighteenth birthday was celebrated with great joy, as her mother loved her dearly, more than anything else, and was protective of her.
However, Nibha had to move to a hostel for further studies, which took a toll on her mother's health. She was going through a difficult time. One day, while shopping with her husband, she saw a girl who looked just like Nibha and, in a moment of shock, jumped out of the moving car, only to be hit by a truck. In an instant, their happy family was shattered.
A Shocking Reunion
Upon hearing the news of her mother's death, Nibha rushed home, crying on her father's shoulder. The day after the funeral, she went to an old age home with her cousins to donate food and blankets in her mother's memory. To her astonishment, she spotted her grandfather there and rushed towards him, asking, "Grandfather, what are you doing here? You were at Uncle's place, right?"
Her cousins quickly interjected, saying, "No, sister, Grandfather moved to the village, as Dad told us." Nibha was confused as to why her parents had lied to her about her grandfather's whereabouts during her childhood. Tears streamed down her grandfather's face as he saw the children; he had long given up hope of seeing them.
When Nibha returned home, she confronted her father and uncle, asking why her grandfather was not present during such a significant family event. She recalled her father's earlier claim that he had moved in with them. Her father and uncle exchanged glances, unsure of how to respond.
Uncovering the Truth
Nibha pressed on, stating, "Today, at the old age home, I saw Grandfather. Why did you both hide this from me?" Her father finally spoke up, explaining, "Your grandfather had some issues; that's why we placed him there. Your mother never liked him. We covered his expenses but couldn't keep him with us. Ask the neighbors; they will confirm this."
Nibha was taken aback, unable to comprehend how her father could speak of his own father in such a manner.
She retorted, "If Grandfather was truly like that, you should have left him. This house belongs to him, and he has every right to live here, not you. I know he confided in me that you and Uncle divided the property and took this house in your name by force. You have tarnished his reputation on purpose. How could you stoop so low for property? I never imagined this from you. I am leaving; you can keep this house."
Nibha's Determination
With a firm resolve, Nibha decided to head towards the old age home, determined to stand by her grandfather.
