Confirming this on Thursday, a source in the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) office said that relief letters have been issued to both the officers by the Commission.
West Bengal Assembly elections 2026 were special in many ways. The state has a history of violence during earlier elections, but this time the voting was relatively peaceful. Apart from this, record voting percentage was also seen.
The Election Commission has acknowledged the role of three officials as important behind this achievement, who monitored and coordinated the entire election process behind the scenes. These include West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal, Special Election Observer Subhrat Gupta and Special Police Observer N.K. Mishra are included.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission on Thursday also lifted the Model Code of Conduct in entire West Bengal except Falta Assembly constituency. Re-polling will be held on Falta seat in South 24 Parganas district on May 21 and counting of votes will take place on May 24.
Actually, on May 4, counting of votes for 293 out of 294 assembly seats of West Bengal was done. Counting of votes did not take place on Falta seat. The Election Commission had decided to conduct re-polling in the entire Falta assembly constituency after receiving complaints of large-scale electoral irregularities during the second phase of voting on April 29.
In another important development on Thursday, former Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court T.S. Sivagnanam resigned from the post of head of the appellate tribunal that was hearing cases to deletion of names from electoral rolls during the special intensive review (SIR) process.
Justice Sivagnanam (retd) was also heading the committee of three retired judges of the Calcutta High Court constituted by the Supreme Court to monitor the functioning of the appellate tribunal.
Justice Shivajnanam has cited personal reasons in his resignation.
