Five tips for solo savers to help beat the cost of living crisis

The renewed cost-of-living crisis is hitting families, couples and single people alike, but it is particularly tough to live alone on a low income. The old saying that "two can live almost as cheaply as one" still rings true, as new research from insurer Aviva highlights the hidden cost of solo living.

Britons who live alone typically spend around £1,250 a month on fixed costs, leaving them with no money left over. They usually spend more than £630 a month on essentials such as food, transport, council tax and utilities. Add rent or mortgage payments, and that rises to around £1,100.

Once broadband, mobile phone bills, insurance and subscription services are added in, the total pushes close to £1,250 a month.

Alistair McQueen, head of savings and retirement at Aviva, said people living solo don't necessarily spend more on essentials, but they do miss out on sharing costs. "You shoulder the responsibility for every bill that hits the doormat."

He added that many are vulnerable to financial shocks, with three in five saying they do not feel confident they could cope with an £850 emergency bill. More than a third of people living alone are not saving anything regularly.

McQueen suggested five practical steps to help improve financial resilience.

  • Build an emergency buffer. Aim for a realistic safety net to cover unexpected costs before focusing on longer-term savings goals.
  • Automate savings. Treat saving like a bill by setting up regular transfers from your salary so money is saved before it is spent elsewhere.
  • Cut costs, not quality of life. Review broadband, mobile and streaming subscriptions regularly to reduce spending without affecting day-to-day living.
  • Use tax-efficient savings where possible. ISAs can help savings grow tax-free, even with small or irregular contributions.
  • Lean on advice and support. Free tools like MoneyHelper, Budget Planner and Citizens Advice can help you stay on track and in control.
