Kenji Ohba dead: Kill Bill legend dies as tributes flood in for 'iconic figure'

Legendary actor and stuntman Kenji Ohba, who appeared in the Kill Bill movies died peacefully on Wednesday (May 6) at the age of 72 following a period of ill health. The news was confirmed by Japan Action Enterprise (JAE), who released a statement paying tribute to the star. "Regarding Kenji Ohba, an actor affiliated with our company who had been recuperating from illness for some time, we regret to inform you that he passed away at 2:23 PM on May 6, 2026, at the age of 72.

"The news of his sudden departure has left our staff, fellow actors, and all team members in a state of disbelief. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to everyone for the kindness and support shown to him throughout his life, and we share this news with profound sorrow. In accordance with the wishes of the bereaved family, the funeral and memorial services will be held privately among close relatives," they wrote.

The star's health woes began in May 2018 when he was hospitalised after fainting at home. Following this, he had stepped back from the entertainment industry and public life although he continued to do voice work until 2021.

In January, his daughter Nao Wakaba, had posted a health update on X as she gave an update about the remake of one of his most famous roles as Space Sherriff Gavan.

She told fans usually, he was fast asleep when she visited but as soon as she talked about the new Space Sheriff series, he attentively listened to the conversation full of energy and enthusiasm.

Outside of Kill Bill and his role as Space Sherriff Gavan he had an impressive CV spanning over five decades since 1965 with roles in iconic movies and TV series including 1983's Legend of the Eight Samurai, 1984's Space Cop Shaider: Pursuit! Shigi Shigi Abduction Plan and 2003's Battle Royale II: Requiem.

Tributes flooded in for the star as fans were left devastated. "Rest in power, Kenji Ohba. Thank you for bringing to life one of the most iconic heroes of my childhood and of so many tokusatsu fans around the world, Retsu Ichijouji / Space Sheriff Gavan...Thank you for the heroism, energy, and joy you shared with the world. My deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and fans worldwide. Your legend will never fade,"one penned on Facebook.

Another added: "Incredibly sad to read about the passing of Kenji Ohba, who played multiple Tokusatsu heroes including the role that became his most famous-Space Sheriff Gavan...The impact of his work will continue to live long in the hearts of fans. As Gavan would say: Farewell to tears, hello courage!"

A third chimed in: "Rest in peace, legend. Still remember him in Kill Bill as the lazy assistant to Hattori Hanzo." A fourth added: "R.I.P. Kenji Ohba. You are always a legend. Thank you for the unforgettable memories."

A fifth commented: "Shocking news. Farewell Legend. Rest in Peace Ohba-san Childhood hero for many of us. Rest in peace Gavan." Meanwhile a sixth shared: "Farewell, Kenji Ohba. Gavan was, without question, one of the most iconic figures for me.
May his passing bring him peace and tranquility."
