The arrival of spring usually sparks the annual garden refresh. If you're anything like me, that means you suddenly have the urge to get the patio, pot some new plants, and give the garden furniture a good clean before the balmy days roll in. But while flowers, foliage and garden furniture might already be sorted, there's another simple addition that can make a real difference to the wildlife visiting your garden too.
Bird baths are a brilliant way to help garden birds during warmer weather, giving them a reliable place to drink, cool off and clean their feathers when temperatures start to rise. And honestly, there's something lovely about spotting birds splashing around on a sunny afternoon.
"Many people put food out for birds, but fewer provide a regular supply of clean water," explain the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. "Birds need water for drinking and bathing. Bird baths are particularly important during the winter when natural supplies may be frozen, and in dry conditions that occur mainly during summer."
Of course, bird baths have come a long way from the basic stone bowls people used to tuck in the corner of the garden. These days, they're designed to look just as decorative as they are practical, with everything from ornate finishes to clever built-in planters. But one design on Amazon has been catching shoppers' attention for another reason entirely - it doubles as a miniature water feature too.
The Bonnlo Bird Bath comes with its own built-in solar fountain, meaning there are no wires, plugs or batteries to worry about. When the sun comes out, the fountain creates a gentle arch of water, giving the whole thing a peaceful, almost spa-like feel for your winged visitors. The rim also has small oval cutouts around the edge, giving smaller birds a place to perch while they lean in for a drink.
At £33.99, shoppers reckon it's pretty good value too.
According to the brand, the bath is designed with stability in mind. The hollow stand can be filled with sand, rocks or water to make it heavier, while spikes at the base help keep it secure in the ground. It's available in a choice of finishes, including antique copper and antique green, while the fountain itself is made from a mix of copper and resin.
And judging by the reviews, birds don't waste much time checking it out. One shopper said birds arrived within minutes of it being set up. In a review, they wrote: "This is a nice looking bird bath, very easy to assemble and the birds started using it within minutes of my putting it out, although so far the starlings are hogging it so the little birds don't get a look in."
The bird bath arrives unassembled, though shoppers say it's straightforward to put together. One person explained: "Fantastic garden bird bath. Holds plenty of water. Very easy to put together. I've ordered a second one! Highly recommended."
Not every review was completely glowing, though, with some shoppers mentioning issues with the floating solar panel. One buyer said: " The Solar panel floats around unless it is weighted down, the little suckers on the base don't hold it in place."
It's also worth keeping in mind that this is a smaller fountain-style feature rather than a large statement water feature, so it's probably best suited to patios, compact gardens or smaller outdoor spaces.
Still, for many shoppers, it's become an easy way to add a little more life to the garden. As one reviewer put it: "This bird bath Pedestal is very nice to look at, it has brought life into the garden."
