Apple's big investment in India
The giant tech company Apple is now not only manufacturing iPhones in India, but is also making huge investments in the environment and green energy sector of the country. On Thursday, the company announced that it will initially invest Rs 100 crore to strengthen the renewable energy infrastructure in India. Along with this, the company is also supporting six early stage startups working in the field of environment.
Preparation to illuminate 1.5 lakh houses
This entire investment is being made in collaboration with a renewable energy developer company named 'CleanMax'. Its direct impact will be that more than 150 MW of new renewable energy capacity will be developed across the country. If understood in simple language, the needs of about 1.5 lakh houses in India can be met every year with this much electricity. Even before this, Apple has partnered with Cleanmax to install rooftop solar projects to run its Indian offices and retail stores on 100 percent clean energy. Now the main objective of this partnership is to increase the use of clean energy in the entire India supply chain of the company.
Apple is kind to 6 indigenous startups
Not only big infrastructure projects, but also small industries that are bringing change at the grassroots level are being supported. Apple has collaborated with 'Acumen'. Under this, financial grants, mentorship and strategic support will be given to six such startups, which are working in important areas like waste management, circular economy and sustainable livelihood. Speaking on Apple's environmental initiatives, company official Sarah Chandler clarified that the company's commitment towards the environment is the main basis of their innovation all over the world.
Aim to become 'carbon neutral'
This big investment comes at a time when Apple is rapidly expanding its manufacturing base in India through its partners like Foxconn and Tata Electronics. Parallel to this, the company aims to make its entire functioning 'carbon neutral' by the year 2030. Apart from this, Apple is also strengthening the recycling system in collaboration with WWF-India to prevent plastic waste from entering the ecosystem. Their successful program with waste-management firm 'Sahas Zero Waste' in Goa is now being extended to new areas like Coimbatore.
These innovations are getting a boost
Apple has also praised the social enterprises in India that it already supports. These include companies like 'Saptkrishi', which makes cheap farm storage for farmers, 'Yotuh Energy', which makes electric refrigerated transport vehicles, and 'MOWO Fleet', which makes women EV drivers and entrepreneurs. The company's recent environmental progress report also testifies that development and environmental protection can go hand in hand. Apple's revenue has increased by a whopping 78 percent since 2015, but despite this, they have recorded a huge reduction in their global greenhouse gas emissions by more than 60 percent.
