As activewear increasingly becomes part of everyday fashion rather than being limited to gyms and workouts, conversations around fabric quality and safety are also gaining attention. According to Prithvi Bhagat , Founder of STRCH Activewear , modern consumers are becoming far more conscious about what goes into the clothes they wear for long hours every day.
“Today’s fitness consumer is not only focused on appearance or performance, but also on comfort, durability and overall well-being,” said Bhagat. He noted that with wellness conversations around nutrition, recovery and mental health becoming mainstream, awareness around activewear fabrics is naturally following the same path.
Bhagat explained that activewear is commonly made using synthetic materials for stretch, moisture management and durability, but not all fabrics are created equally. “There is growing global attention on safer alternatives and smarter fabric innovation, especially with discussions around chemical finishes and substances such as PFAS, often called ‘forever chemicals’,” he said.
He added that newer engineered materials, including advanced nylon blends, are now being developed to offer breathability, softness and comfort without compromising on style or performance. “Well-designed fabrics can provide a second-skin feel while remaining lightweight and suitable for Indian weather conditions,” Bhagat said.
With activewear now worn beyond workouts for errands, travel and workdays, prolonged skin contact has also become an important factor. Bhagat pointed out that breathability, moisture management and softness are essential for long-term comfort, particularly in warmer climates.
“The future of activewear will be shaped not just by style, but by how thoughtfully garments are designed, from fabric choices to overall functionality,” he added.
