New Delhi: Can spirituality and technology ever go together? This dream has now become a reality. A humanoid robot has made its official debut as a monk at Seoul’s Jogyesa Temple in South Korea. Ahead of Buddha’s birthday celebrations, this robot represents a unique fusion of Buddhism and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Robot’s name ‘Gabi’
According to Reuters, the name of this 130 cm high robot is ‘Gabi’. He was dressed in traditional brown and gray Buddhist robes and stood in front of senior monks during an official ordination ceremony.
Robot chose the path of spirituality
In South Korea, a humanoid robot named Gabi participated in prayers with monks at Seoul’s Jogyesa Temple ahead of Buddha Purnima. This robot was made by the Chinese company ‘Unitree Robotics’. During a ritual held on Wednesday, this 130 cm high robot bowed before the monks and nuns and pledged its allegiance and dedication to Buddhism.
When a monk asked the robot whether he would have full allegiance to the Holy Buddha, the robot replied in a clear voice, Yes. His voice was so clear that everyone present there could hear him easily.
A garland of 108 pearls was worn
A monk carefully placed a rosary of 108 pearls around Gabi’s neck and also placed a sticker on her arm. This work is traditional "yeonbi" It was done as an alternative to tradition. It is noteworthy that in this traditional practice, small marks were made on the skin of new monks with burning incense sticks.
Claim to adopt Buddhism
Seong Won told that the robot has been named Gabi. This name is derived from the Korean words used for Siddhartha and Daya. He said that the aim was to choose a name that would not sound too difficult or old to pronounce and which would symbolize the spread of Buddha’s compassion throughout the world. This sect has made five special rules for this robot. According to reports, AI platforms like Gemini and ChatGPT were also used in the process of making these rules.
