New Delhi. Discussions regarding the 8th Pay Commission have intensified in the country. Brainstorming is going on on the salary, allowances and pension system of central employees. Meanwhile, a big demand has come forward regarding pension reform, which has increased the expectations of lakhs of government employees.
All India NPS Employees Federation has placed a big demand before the 8th Pay Commission that the employees covered under the National Pension System i.e. NPS should be given the option to choose the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) after working for a few years.
Demand for OPS for NPS employees
The Federation raised this issue prominently in the meeting held with 8th Pay Commission Chairperson Ranjana Prakash Desai on 30 April 2026. The Federation says that employees should be assured of fixed pension after retirement. According to Federation President Manjit Singh Patel, if the government wants, it can keep its share of contribution and the returns received on it, while the employees can join OPS with their contribution and the benefits received from it.
Demand to abolish NPS has been raised earlier also
All India NPS Employees Federation has earlier also been demanding the complete abolition of the NPS system and reinstatement of the old pension scheme. However, this demand was not supported by the Commission. Now instead of implementing OPS completely, the Federation has suggested an option-based system, so that employees can get a chance to take decisions as per their convenience.
Lakhs of employees have their eyes on the 8th Pay Commission
Now the eyes of central employees and pensioners are fixed on the recommendations of the 8th Pay Commission. If a positive decision is taken on demands like giving the option of OPS, it may impact lakhs of employees across the country. At present the government and the commission are considering all these proposals.
