From Ban to Box Office: 'The Bengal Files' Finally Hits West Bengal After Historic Political Shift

Following a period of intense controversy and a total blackout in the state, Vivek Agnihotri’s provocative film, "The Bengal Files," is finally set for a theatrical release in West Bengal. The news comes on the heels of a seismic shift in the state's political landscape, where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is poised to take the helm after the recent Assembly elections.

While the rest of India saw the film upon its nationwide release on September 5, 2025, the movie remained off-limits to Bengali audiences—until now.

A "Forbidden" Film Returns to Kolkata

Director Vivek Agnihotri took to Instagram shortly after the election results to celebrate the move, alleging that the previous administration under Mamata Banerjee had actively banned the film and even sabotaged its trailer launch. With the change in government, Agnihotri is preparing for a grand re-release in the state capital this Friday.

"A film that was censored was not allowed to be released in Bengal because of a party," said Arijit Dutta, owner of Priya Cinemas. "I'm happy that Bengal will finally see it."

State-Wide Distribution Underway

The release isn't limited to just a few screens in Kolkata. Distributor Satdeep Saha has confirmed that they are currently finalizing a comprehensive list of theaters across the entire state of West Bengal. After months of being "the film everyone talked about but no one in Bengal could see," preparations are in full swing to bring it to a massive audience.

'The Bengal Files' At a Glance

Despite the high-profile nature of the project and its star-studded cast, the film struggled to find its footing at the global box office during its initial run.

  • Directed by: Vivek Agnihotri

  • Starring: Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Pallavi Joshi, Darshan Kumar, Simrit Kaur Randhawa, and Namashi Chakraborty.

  • Budget: Estimated between ₹35 and ₹50 crore.

  • Initial Box Office: Grossed ₹23 crore worldwide, underperforming relative to its high production costs.

The Verdict: Will Curiosity Drive a Comeback?

Industry insiders believe the previous ban may have inadvertently created a massive "curiosity factor" in the state. As theaters gear up for Friday's opening, all eyes are on West Bengal to see if the local audience can revive the film’s financial fortunes and turn a box office underdog into a regional success.
