Patna: The long-awaited cabinet expansion of the NDA government led by Samrat Choudhary took place in Bihar on Thursday, May 7. In a grand ceremony held at Gandhi Maidan, a total of 31 dignitaries, including Nishant Kumar, son of JD-U chief Nitish Kumar, were sworn in as ministers.
Governor Lieutenant General (Retd.) Syed Ata Hasnain administered the oath of office and secrecy to the new ministers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Rajya Sabha MP Nitish Kumar witnessed this historic moment.
Priority has been given to all five parties of the NDA alliance in the new cabinet. The selection of Nishant Kumar, son of Nitish Kumar, as a minister has drawn significant attention. Former Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha, along with veteran leaders Shravan Kumar and Ashok Choudhary, have also secured ministerial positions.
Alliance parties
In addition to the BJP and JD-U, representation has been given to Chirag Paswan’s LJPRV, Jitan Ram Manjhi’s HAM, and Upendra Kushwaha’s RLM.
A wave of major changes swept through Bihar last month after Nitish Kumar resigned from the post of Chief Minister following his election to the Rajya Sabha. BJP leader Samrat Choudhary subsequently took over as the Chief Minister. Notably, this is the first time in Bihar's history that a BJP leader is leading the government.
This cabinet expansion has been carried out to unite all communities and allies with an eye on the upcoming elections. The induction of Nishant Kumar into the cabinet as Nitish Kumar’s political successor has sparked a new debate in Bihar politics.
