There was a time when Vijay wanted nothing to do with politics, even as those closest to him pushed him toward it. Now, the actor-turned-politician stands at the centre of Tamil Nadu’s newest political upheaval, with his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), emerging as the single-largest force in the 2026 Assembly elections.
The contrast between then and now is striking. In 2021, Vijay went so far as to take legal action against 11 people, including his parents, to stop them from using his name, photographs and fan club for political activity. At the time, his father, S A Chandrashekar, had already converted the actor’s fan association into a political outfit, Vijay Makkal Iyakam, without what Vijay said was his consent. He publicly distanced himself from the move and made it clear there was no direct or indirect link between him and the party.
Years later, the same man who once resisted being drawn into politics launched his own party and became the face of a serious challenge to Tamil Nadu’s long-standing political duopoly. TVK, formed in 2024 and registered with the Election Commission in September that year, swept 107 seats in the 234-member House, according to results announced on Monday. The DMK alliance won 74 seats, while the NDA secured 53. On Tuesday, the final tally was updated to 108 seats, putting Vijay’s party in an even stronger position as it edged close to the majority mark of 118.
For Tamil Nadu, the result marks a significant break from the political pattern that has largely defined the state since 1967. For Vijay, it is a personal turnaround as dramatic as the electoral outcome itself.
Beyond the election headlines, Vijay’s story also reflects a deeply familiar parenting conflict: the struggle between parental ambition and a child’s right to choose their own path. Vijay’s early resistance was not just a political disagreement; it was also a reminder that adult children do not always inherit the ambitions their parents imagine for them. In 2021, his legal step against his own parents drew attention not only because of his fame, but because it highlighted a deeper and familiar family tension: the difference between guiding a child and deciding for them.
That tension played out in public, with the elder Chandrashekhar turning a fan base into a political vehicle and Vijay drawing a clear line around his own autonomy. Whatever his father’s intentions, Vijay insisted that his name and image could not be used for a political project he had not chosen for himself. It was a rare and public assertion of personal agency in a family matter that had spilled into the legal arena.
Then came the reversal
In February 2024, Vijay formally entered politics and launched TVK, a move that finally placed him in the field his father had once tried to steer him toward. The party later positioned itself around secularism, social justice and egalitarianism, invoking the ideas of B R Ambedkar, Periyar and K Kamaraj. What had once been a source of conflict became the foundation of a political career.
This year’s election was Vijay’s first direct contest. He had earlier tested the waters through his fan club in local body polls, but the 2026 Assembly election marked his full leap into electoral politics. Contending from Perambur and Tiruchi East, he won both seats and delivered a debut that few had expected to be this emphatic.
Here are three parenting lessons his journey quietly highlights.
1. Children need direction, but they also need the freedom to choose
Many parents dream deeply for their children. Sometimes those dreams come from love, sacrifice and the desire to see them succeed. But Vijay’s story is a reminder that even adult children need the right to decide what kind of life they want for themselves.
When his father converted Vijay’s fan association into a political outfit, the actor made it clear he had not agreed to it. His response was unusually public, but the emotional conflict behind it is common in many families: parents believing they know what is best, while children struggle to protect their independence. By publicly objecting to the use of his identity for political purposes, Vijay was not only making a political statement. He was also asserting personal agency. That can feel uncomfortable in close-knit families, especially when parents believe their intentions are good. But healthy parenting includes recognising that children, especially grown children, are separate individuals, not extensions of parental ambition. The strongest parent-child relationships are rarely the ones built on control. They are the ones where love survives even when opinions, goals and identities differ.
For the family story at the heart of it, the shift is just as notable. Vijay’s trajectory shows how parenting, especially in the public eye, can become complicated when expectation crosses into pressure. It also shows that children, even grown ones, may reject a path before deciding to walk it on their own terms. In Vijay’s case, the son who once sued his parents over political overreach has now become the face of a movement that could reshape the state’s future.
From resistance to reinvention, the journey has been unusual, even cinematic. But beneath the politics lies a more human story: of a son asserting his will, a family divided over ambition, and a career that finally took shape only after a painful lesson in boundaries.
