Many may not be familiar with Shiv Tandan, but a closer look reveals a versatile artist whose talents span various fields. He is known for crafting viral hits like 'Dooron Dooron' and 'Bottlan,' as well as award-winning theatrical productions. Additionally, he addresses gaps in the education system through his YouTube channel, Central Board for Fixing Education.
Recently, he directed a short film titled 'Roy Is Missing,' which highlights the struggles of students ensnared by the rigidities of the education system. Reflecting on the situation, he states, “The system has become everything,” and references Rabindranath Tagore’s tale, 'The Parrot’s Training,' to emphasize the emptiness of seeking external validation and the pitfalls of achievement-driven educational goals.
Shiv believes that “Art is meant to make us look inwards.” This insight emerged during his studies in systems engineering in Singapore, where he joined a theatre group. Under the mentorship of Huzir Sulaiman, he penned his debut play, 'The Good, the Bad and the Sholay.' Initially uncertain about his choice of the iconic film as a reference, he later recognized it as a metaphor for yearning for home. His experiences in urban settings inspired his writing, as seen in his play 'Fistful of Rupees,' which features extended monologues about the bustling Maximum City. He frequently visits Chandigarh, which may also become a character in his future works.
While co-directing a performance piece called 'Unicorn Moment,' Shiv discovered the true essence of being an artist. He describes art as not merely nourishment for the soul but a healing force, a 'panacea for mankind.' In an age dominated by algorithms, he asserts, “Only art can reinforce shared reality, connect us to the spiritual, and allow us to relish the creative process.” He expresses concern over AI creators who seek to bypass the intricate journey of artistic creation, where the true magic resides.
Shiv's songwriting is deeply influenced by Sufi traditions, a natural reflection of his Punjabi heritage, where sentiments like 'Tujh mein rab dikhda hai' resonate. His collaboration with singer-actor Paresh Pahuja, whose voice has significantly popularized his lyrics, has a long history.
Frustrated with the political climate, Shiv wrote the song 'Kya Chunega,' prompting Paresh to reach out to him. Their creative partnership flourished, leading to Shiv directing Paresh’s concert, 'Voice Notes.' Despite the pressures of deadlines, Shiv remains committed to the core purpose of art. He recognizes that in a society fraught with tension, only art can provide the necessary softness and foster empathy.
