HOUSTON (AP) - Andy Pages set new career records with three home runs and six RBIs, while Shohei Ohtani contributed two hits to propel the Los Angeles Dodgers to a decisive 12-2 victory against the Houston Astros on Wednesday.
The Dodgers' starter, Tyler Glasnow, surrendered a solo home run in the first inning but exited the game due to low back pain prior to the second. Jack Dreyer (2-3) took the mound and delivered two scoreless innings, leading a group of six relievers who collectively limited the Astros to just one run following Glasnow's early exit. Pages' Historic Performance Pages initiated his record-setting performance with a three-run homer off Lance McCullers Jr. (2-3) during a five-run third inning, pushing the score to 6-1. He later added a two-run shot in the fifth inning against Jason Alexander. His final contribution was a solo homer to begin the ninth inning, hit off catcher César Salazar, who had transitioned from behind the plate to pitch due to the game's lopsided nature and the exhaustion of Houston's bullpen. Ohtani Breaks Slump Ohtani ended a 0-for-18 slump with a double in the third inning, followed by an RBI single in the fifth. This marked his second longest hitless streak, trailing only a 0-for-19 stretch in 2020. Glasnow's Early Exit Glasnow allowed a home run to the leadoff hitter Brice Matthews before retiring the next three batters, concluding the first inning with two strikeouts. After warming up for the second inning, he indicated discomfort and left the game. Notably, Glasnow's strikeout of Yordan Alvarez in the first inning marked the 1,000th of his career. McCullers' Struggles McCullers faced difficulties, giving up four hits and six runs in just 2 2/3 innings. His performance included three walks and three wild pitches, managing to throw only 39 of his 70 pitches for strikes. The Dodgers tied the game in the second inning when a run scored with two outs due to a wild pitch from McCullers. Key Moments in the Game In the third inning, Alex Freeland walked with no outs before Ohtani's double, which contributed to Freeland scoring on another wild pitch, leading to a 3-1 advantage for the Dodgers. Pages then hit a sinker off the left field wall, extending the lead to 6-1. Upcoming Games Both teams will have a day off on Thursday before the Dodgers host the Braves on Friday night, while the Astros will begin a series in Cincinnati that same evening.
