In the backdrop of 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, Samajwadi Party has decided to distance itself from political advisory body Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC). This decision is said to have been taken after the parties associated with this organization faced defeat in the recent elections in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.

The Akhilesh Yadav-led party had never announced any formal alliance with I-PAC, but according to sources, talks were on for the past several months regarding possible election campaigning and management. Now this conversation has been stopped. ‘India Today’ has given news in this regard. Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal and M.K. The decision gained momentum after Stalin’s recent defeat, where I-PAC was said to be involved in election strategy and campaign management.

Now the leadership of Samajwadi Party wants to rely on its organization and internal political system instead of giving the responsibility of publicity to any external advisory body. This decision was reconsidered even after the investigation into I-PAC started earlier this year. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had raided the Kolkata office of I-PAC and the residence of co-founder Prateek Jain in a money laundering case to coal smuggling. After these raids, political controversy had escalated in West Bengal, where Mamata Banerjee herself reached the I-PAC office and accused the central agencies of targeting the party’s data and election strategy.

There was also uneasiness within the party regarding the timing of ED’s action. On the same day the I-PAC office in Kolkata was being raided, its representatives were giving a presentation to Samajwadi Party leaders in Lucknow on possible cooperation for the 2027 elections. This development and the subsequent election results in Bengal and Tamil Nadu strengthened the perception within the party that closer proximity to I-PAC could be politically damaging.

There is little possibility of any formal statement coming from the party on this issue. Both the Samajwadi Party and I-PAC have not officially reacted to the alleged gap. The 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections are being considered as a direct contest between Samajwadi Party and BJP. Meanwhile, Akhilesh Yadav has become active on the issues of unemployment, caste census, law and order and farmers.
