Bhagwant Mann’s ‘Shukrana Yatra’ begins: Expressed gratitude from Anandpur Sahib, called sacrilege law a historic step

Punjab news: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann started the ‘Shukrana Yatra’ with full enthusiasm after paying obeisance at Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib here today. In the presence of Cabinet Minister Harjot Singh Bains, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann said that this yatra is being done to thank God, who has given him the opportunity to serve humanity by implementing the Jagatjot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satikar (Amendment) Act 2026, which provides for strict punishment in cases of sacrilege.

Punjab news: Sacrilege law described as historic

Paying obeisance at the holy Takht Sahib, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann said, “I am indebted to God for giving me the opportunity to serve humanity by enacting the Jagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satikar (Amendment) Act 2026. We are fortunate to have got the responsibility of passing this historic law, which will be helpful in eliminating incidents of sacrilege in the future.”

He said that the sacrilege of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji was part of a deeper conspiracy, the aim of which was to break the peace, fraternal harmony and unity of Punjab. Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann said that This Act ensures that no person found guilty of this unpardonable crime will be pardoned and exemplary punishment will be given to those guilty of this heinous crime. This law will act as a deterrent and no one will dare to commit such a crime in future.”

Emphasis on spiritual sharing

Emphasizing on the spiritual bond of Sikhs with Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, the Chief Minister said, “Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is like a father to every Sikh and it is our duty to protect its sanctity. People all over the world are rejoicing and thanking this historic step.”

The journey will continue till May 9

Regarding Shukrana Yatra, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann said that after Sri Anandpur Sahib, he will pay obeisance at Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Sri Damdama Sahib, Mastuana Sahib, Gurdwara Dukh Nivaran Sahib and Sri Fatehgarh Sahib till May 9. He thanked the people who gathered here despite the extreme heat and said that “The sole purpose of this visit is to thank God for the strength and grace to pass this important Act.”

Called myself Guru’s servant

Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann said, “We are just a medium whom Guru Sahib has chosen to fulfill this sacred responsibility. I am not someone to pass this act. Guru Sahib himself has taken this service from me. God entrusts such service only to those whom he himself has chosen. I am a humble servant of Guru Sahib, who has been entrusted with this work.”

There is no political intention behind the law

He further said that people from all sections of the society had been demanding such a law for a long time to stop incidents of sacrilege. Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann said, “The sole purpose of this Act is to calm the disturbed sentiments of the people due to the negligence of the previous governments. There is no political intention behind this law.”

Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann said that people from all over the world are calling daily to thank us for this initiative, but he said that some individuals are opposing the Act only because their political masters are unhappy. He said, “It is unfortunate that some people are playing politics even on this sacred issue for their personal interests because they know that they will soon have to face the consequences of their crimes.”

Remembered the younger Sahibzadas

Recalling his tenure as a Lok Sabha member, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann said that he, along with former Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, had successfully advocated in the House the case of paying tribute to Chhote Sahibzadas on their martyrdom day. He said that the entire Punjab observes that time as a month of mourning because the younger Sahibzadas were buried alive by the cruel rulers. More than 190 MPs represented Punjab before me, but none of them raised this issue in Parliament.”

Inspiration will come from martyrdom

The Chief Minister said that the martyrdom of Chhota Sahibzadas will continue to inspire the coming generations to fight against tyranny, injustice and oppression. Referring to the historical importance of Sri Anandpur Sahib, he said, “On this holy land, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji had revealed the Khalsa Panth on April 13, 1699, which was an event that gave a new turn to history. On this day, our government has passed a historic law against sacrilege.”

Special session of Assembly also here

The Chief Minister also warned that a special session of the Punjab Assembly was called at Sri Anandpur Sahib on the occasion of the 350th martyrdom day of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji. He said that this is the first time in history when the Punjab Assembly bowed at the feet of Guru Sahib. “During this special session, the Assembly unanimously passed the resolution granting holy city status to Amritsar, Talwandi Sabo and Sri Anandpur Sahib.”

Highlighting the spiritual importance of Sikhism in Punjab, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann said that three of the five Takhts of Sikhs – Sri Akal Takht Sahib (Amritsar), Sri Damdama Sahib (Talwandi Sabo) and Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib (Sri Anandpur Sahib) – fall in Punjab. He said, “Keeping in mind the long pending demand of the people, the Punjab government has given the status of sacred cities to these cities. No stone will be left unturned for the overall development of these cities and there is no dearth of funds for this work.”
