Shirva: A fire broke out near Bantakal Podamale on Wednesday afternoon after sparks from an electricity transformer ignited dry grass, leading to a blaze that spread across nearby vegetation.

The incident occurred near the Vishwakarma Sangha premises, where a short circuit in the transformer caused sparks to fall on dry grass. The fire quickly spread along both sides of the Bantakal–Podamale roadside, affecting nearly half a kilometre of forest area and burning trees and plants.

The flames also spread towards nearby residential areas. Local residents acted promptly and managed to control the fire from reaching two houses, averting a major mishap.

A team from the Udupi Fire and Emergency Services, led by officer Alvin Prashanth, arrived at the spot and brought the fire under control.

Bantakal Civic Committee president K R Patkar, Umesh Rao, Veerendra Patkar, Raghavendra Nayak, MESCOM lineman Manjunath and his team, along with members of the Bantakal Auto Drivers and Owners Association including Manoj Saliyan and Shailesh Poojary, assisted in firefighting efforts.
