Rising heat raises LPG risks: Safety tips every household must follow

As temperatures continue to rise across India, fire safety concerns have also increased. Authorities and safety experts have cautioned households to remain alert, especially while handling Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders, which can become hazardous if not used and stored properly during extreme heat.

LPG is stored in liquid form under pressure. When exposed to high temperatures, the liquid expands, increasing pressure inside the cylinder. Though cylinders are fitted with safety valves, prolonged exposure to heat or flames can increase the risk of leaks, fire, or even explosion.

Key safety measures to follow

Households are advised to follow basic precautions to reduce risks:

Store in a cool, ventilated area:
Cylinders should always be kept upright in a well-ventilated space, away from direct sunlight, stoves, or heat-generating appliances. Balconies can be used only if properly shaded.

Regularly check for leaks
Rubber pipes and regulators may weaken due to heat. Use soapy water to check for leaks—bubbles indicate a problem. Do not use a flame to detect leaks. In case of gas smell, switch off the regulator immediately and ventilate the area.

Maintain distance from heat sources
Keep cylinders at least five feet away from stoves, electrical points, and open flames. Avoid storing flammable materials nearby.

Avoid confined spaces
LPG is heavier than air and can accumulate at floor level in closed spaces, increasing explosion risk. Cylinders should not be kept in pits or enclosed compartments.

Turn off regulator after use
Always switch off the cylinder valve after cooking. Leaving it on may allow gas to remain in the pipe.

Steps to take if gas smell is detected

If LPG leakage is suspected, ensure burner knobs are turned off, extinguish all flames, avoid using electrical switches, and open doors and windows for ventilation. The regulator should be turned off immediately. If the smell persists, contact the gas distributor or emergency services without delay.
