Jakarta: At least 16 people were killed and four others seriously injured after a passenger bus collided head-on with a fuel tanker on Indonesia’s Sumatra island on Wednesday, disaster management officials said.
The accident occurred in North Musi Rawas regency. According to officials, the speeding bus rammed into a fuel-laden tanker, triggering a fire in both vehicles. The flames quickly engulfed the bus and tanker, leading to the tragedy.
Among the deceased, 14 were bus passengers, while two were from the tanker. The injured were shifted to a hospital, with three reported to be in critical condition.
Preliminary investigation indicated that the bus driver lost control after a tyre burst, leading to the collision with the oncoming diesel tanker. The presence of fuel caused the fire to spread rapidly.
Emergency rescue teams rushed to the spot, but intense flames made rescue operations difficult.
Transport accidents are reported frequently in Indonesia, often attributed to ageing vehicles and poor maintenance of buses, trains, and aircraft.
