Major General Aviv Kochavi, the chief of the Israeli army, has made a striking admission regarding the military's actions, stating that they are committing killings with unprecedented brutality since 1967. He reportedly acknowledged that there is a discriminatory approach between Jews and Palestinians within the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). These comments were made during a recent closed-door meeting, as reported by an Israeli newspaper.
Kochavi revealed that in 2025, Israeli forces killed 42 Palestinian stone throwers. He expressed disapproval of shooting at Jewish settlements where stones are thrown at vehicles. Referring to an incident from the previous year, he mentioned that two masked Jews were shot for throwing stones at drivers, which caused significant uproar. He provided two more examples, including one where a 15-year-old anarchist in Beit She'an was shot for allegedly throwing stones at a military jeep, resulting in injury. Kochavi noted that the officer was unaware they were Jewish until he heard them speaking Hebrew.
In another instance, the army chief discussed a case where a police officer shot at right-wing activists, seriously injuring one of them, reportedly after the police used pepper spray against him.
Kochavi admitted that he prefers non-violent methods for dispersing Jewish protesters and detaining suspects in such cases, acknowledging the serious social implications of these incidents. He emphasized that there is no need for gunfire, admitting that discrimination is indeed present. The legal proceedings and arrests differ significantly between Palestinians and Jews, with Palestinians facing military law in the West Bank and often being held without trial for extended periods, while Jews and Israelis are prosecuted in civilian courts.
