Dinesh Karthik’s move from player to coach with Royal Challengers Bengaluru didn’t happen overnight. It was a gradual decision shaped by trust, timing and a little push from Virat Kohli.
Dinesh Karthik, who now serves as RCB’s batting coach and mentor, revealed that the idea first came up during the IPL 2024. Mo Bobat, part of the franchise’s management, approached him in the middle of the tournament and asked if he would be interested in taking up a coaching role in the future. At that time, Dinesh Karthik was still playing and RCB were struggling badly, having lost most of their early matches and facing an uphill battle in the season.
Despite the team’s poor run, Mo Bobat believed Dinesh Karthik could bring value to the group in a different role. DK admitted that the situation was unusual and the timing made the decision even more challenging. He took his time to think it through and discussed it with his wife Dipika Pallikal along with key members of the RCB setup like Mo Bobat and Malolan Rangarajan.
What stood out to Dinesh Karthik was the clarity offered about the role. Instead of pressuring him, the management simply explained what the position would involve and why they thought it suited him at that stage of his career. This honest approach helped him feel more comfortable about the transition.
A major influence in his final decision was Virat Kohli. Towards the end of the season, Kohli had a conversation with Dinesh Karthik and Virat encouraged him to seriously consider the opportunity. He believed that DK’s experience and understanding of the game would make him a great fit for the role.
After retiring from playing, Dinesh Karthik received the official offer and decided to accept it. Head coach Andy Flower was also keen on bringing him into the setup. The decision proved to be a masterstroke, as DK played an important role behind the scenes when RCB went on to win their first ever IPL title, defeating Punjab Kings in the final at Ahmedabad.
