The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has opened applications for the National Overseas Scholarship (NOS) for the 2026–27 cycle, with the online portal open from April 24 to June 2, followed by a correction window until June 7.

What is the National Overseas Scholarship

The National Overseas Scholarship is a government scheme that supports students from marginalised communities to pursue higher education abroad. It is open to candidates from Scheduled Castes, Denotified Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes, landless agricultural labourers and traditional artisans.

The scheme funds Master’s and PhD programmes at foreign universities, with the aim of improving access to global education and supporting economic and social mobility.

Application process and timeline

Candidates must register on the official portal and complete the application form by providing personal, academic and other required details. The ministry said no changes will be allowed after registration, and incomplete applications will be rejected.

After the main application window closes on June 2, applicants will get a four-day correction period from June 4 to June 7 to edit submitted forms. No new registrations will be allowed during this period.

Eligibility and key requirements

Applicants must be below 35 years of age and should provide details such as domicile, educational qualifications and admission status in a foreign university. The application also requires information on family income and category eligibility.

Candidates applying for PhD programmes must include details of their research topic and a brief description.

Documents required

Applicants must upload a set of documents, including Aadhaar, caste certificate, academic mark sheets, income certificates of family members and an unconditional offer letter from a foreign university.

The ministry said all documents must be uploaded in the prescribed format, and incorrect or incomplete submissions may lead to rejection.

The scheme is part of the government’s effort to expand access to international education for underrepresented groups and support skill development through global exposure.
