Mangaluru: Pedestrians in Mangaluru are facing serious risks due to increasing traffic and lack of proper road infrastructure. Many people are forced to walk along roadsides, putting their lives at risk.
Officials say that violations by drivers, lack of basic facilities on footpaths, and absence of proper crossing systems are major reasons for the rising number of pedestrian deaths.
According to data from the city traffic police, the number of pedestrian deaths in the past three years has been a matter of concern. In 2024, 66 pedestrians lost their lives, while the number increased to 67 in 2025.
As per data available till April 2026, 26 pedestrians have already died. This shows the seriousness of the situation. At the same time, hundreds of pedestrians have been injured in road accidents.
There is a growing need to focus on pedestrian safety. Traffic police are taking action by imposing fines for rule violations and conducting awareness campaigns. However, officials say this is not enough. Without voluntary compliance from the public, penalties alone cannot solve the problem.
Violation of traffic rules remains a major cause of accidents. Drunk driving, use of mobile phones while driving, and overspeeding are leading to fatal incidents due to momentary negligence.
Authorities say pedestrian safety is not only the responsibility of the police but also of every driver. Following traffic rules can help save lives.
Measures needed:
- Installation of zebra crossings on all roads
- Safe pathways for pedestrians
- Speed control measures near schools and hospitals
- Strengthening CCTV and smart traffic systems
- Awareness among drivers and pedestrians on rule compliance
