New Delhi. The Sports Ministry clarified on Wednesday that the ban on bilateral sports relations with Pakistan will continue in future also. However, there will be no restriction on the participation of players from both the countries in international and multilateral competitions. The ministry also reiterated that the visa process for players, team officials, technical staff and officials of international sports organizations will be simplified, so as to establish India as a preferred sports destination.

What did the Sports Ministry say?
In a circular issued to all National Sports Federations (NSF), Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and Sports Authority of India (SAI), the ministry said, ‘Indian teams will not travel to Pakistan in the context of bilateral sports competitions, nor will Pakistani teams be allowed to play in India.’ The circular further said, ‘Decisions in case of international and multilateral competitions will be taken keeping in mind the rules of international sports bodies and the interests of Indian players.’
What is its meaning?
Indian players will continue to participate in those international competitions in which players from Pakistan are also participating. Similarly, players from Pakistan will be able to participate in multilateral competitions organized in India.
When was the policy announced?
This policy was first announced in August 2024, when there was controversy over India’s participation in the Asia Cup held in the UAE. At that time the ministry had clarified that participation in multilateral competitions would continue provided Pakistan was not the host country.
What preparation for CWG and Olympics?
The ministry also indicated that India will adhere to the inclusive principles of the Olympic Charter in line with its ambition to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the 2036 Olympic Games. Apart from this, the ministry said that the visa process for international sports events will be further simplified. Officials of international sports organizations will be given multi-entry visas on priority basis for a maximum period of five years.
