The ongoing talks to end the ongoing conflict between America and Iran are in the final stages. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has taken a big decision regarding the Strait of Hormuz. The US President has announced the temporary closure of ‘Project Freedom’, a naval operation providing security to commercial ships in the Middle East. However, he also said that the US blockade of Iranian ports would continue.
Trump wrote in a post on his social media ‘Truth’, ‘Negotiations regarding the deal with representatives of Iran are progressing.’ Trump claimed that he has temporarily halted Operation ‘Project Freedom’ to finalize the deal with Iran.
He said, ‘At the request of Pakistan and other countries, based on the tremendous military success achieved during the campaign against Iran, as well as good negotiations with the representatives of Iran regarding the peace deal, we have mutually decided that the blockade will remain in full force, but Project Freedom will be put on hold for some time, so that it can be seen whether an agreement can be finalized or not.’
The Trump administration had started ‘Project Freedom’, which is a military operation. Its purpose is to restart the safe movement of merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz amid increasing tension with Iran. The target of this operation is to ensure that international commercial ships can pass through this strait safely.
The US alleges that Iran has attacked ships several times in recent weeks. The Strait of Hormuz is a very important route, because about one-fifth of the world’s oil passes through this route. Therefore, it is important for the whole world to keep it safe. The US has deployed a large military force for this mission, which includes more than 15,000 soldiers, guided-missile destroyer ships, helicopters and more than 100 aircraft.
