UPI failure: NPCI’s new 2026 rules shift recurring debits to ‘off-peak’ window

If you wake up in the morning and see a payment failure notification for your SIP or OTT subscription, you are not alone. A silent shift in India’s digital architecture is changing how and when your money moves.

From May 2026, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has started enforcing a strict “execution window” for UPI Autopay. Its purpose is simple: to de-clog the system during the morning rush.

NPCI data shows that peak hours (10:00 am to 1:00 pm) have the highest transaction load. To keep the system stable, the new rules now prevent automated payments during these windows. If your EMI is scheduled for 10:30 am, it is now likely to have a “Technical Decline”.

Banks are being asked to move these background tasks to non-peak hours: typically before 10:00 am, between 1:00 pm and 5:00 pm, or after 9:30 pm.

Blockage of ₹15,000

This interruption is also to RBI’s e-Mandate Framework (2026). Although you can now make auto-pay up to ₹15,000 without OTP, the setup rules are more stringent.

A “Pre-Debit Notification” should be sent at least 24 hours in advance for each mandate. If your bank’s server is not able to send this alert, then the morning payment is automatically blocked. This is a security feature, but it is causing problems for users whose banks’ notification systems are slow.

how to fix your mistakes

Industry experts suggest that users keep control on their schedule. Try these steps to make sure your payments go through:

Extend your SIP or bill date beyond the 1st of the month.

Set your mandate for the late evening slot (after 9:30 pm) when server traffic is the lowest. Make sure your bank has your correct email and number, otherwise the 24-hour debit rule will cancel your transaction.
