If someone asks you about Dalip Singh Rana, most people might respond with a puzzled 'who?' However, mention 'The Great Khali,' and everyone will nod in recognition. Born on August 27, 1972, in a small village in Himachal Pradesh, Dalip Singh Rana has become a global name. While many are familiar with his wrestling persona, few know that he faced severe poverty during his childhood, which forced him to break stones for a living. Despite these hardships, Dalip's determination led him to transform from a struggling individual into the renowned wrestler known as The Great Khali.
Overcoming Adversity
Khali's childhood was marked by challenges, but he never let his physical differences discourage him. Instead of lamenting his stature, he focused on hard work. After a stint as a stonebreaker, he took a job as a security guard. His life took a turn in 1994 when Punjab was rife with militancy. The then IG of Punjab Police, Mahal Singh Bhullar, initiated a recruitment drive to engage youth and divert them from extremism. With his towering height of 7 feet 1 inch, Dalip was recruited into the Punjab Police.
A New Path in Wrestling
During his time in the police force, Khali explored shot put and later ventured into bodybuilding. He recalls that when he first saw WWE matches on television, he mistook them for English films. Inspired by the wrestlers, he aspired to become one himself. His friends even nicknamed him 'The Undertaker,' which fueled his ambition. After reaching out to WWE through emails with the help of friends, he received an opportunity that changed his life.
Success in WWE
Khali trained in Japan for four years before making his WWE debut in 2005. He quickly gained fame by defeating several prominent wrestlers, transforming from Dalip Singh to The Great Khali. He remained with WWE until 2014, facing legends like Triple H, The Rock, Brock Lesnar, John Cena, and Randy Orton. His unique background and stature caught the attention of WWE management, leading to his initial name 'Great Kali,' inspired by the goddess Kali. To avoid any religious controversy, he later changed it to 'The Great Khali.' Ultimately, it was IG Mahal Singh Bhullar who played a pivotal role in shaping Dalip Singh Rana into the wrestling superstar he is today.
