While both Pinarayi Vijayan and M.K. Stalin resigned from their chief ministerial posts, Mamata Banerjee is yet to hand in her resignation letter after her defeat at the 2026 Assembly elections.
Local reports are speculating the reason why Mamata hasn’t handed in her resignation immediately after the results on Monday confirmed the party’s defeat.
The party head is now officially the former Chief Minister of West Bengal.
In March 2026, Banerjee had resigned from over 20 posts she held as the chief minister of the state, including State Health Mission head society of Health and Demographic Surveillance chairperson, ahead of the assembly elections.
When Banerjee won the elections in 2011, former Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya resigned from the post of Chief Minister on the day of counting and declaration of results.
Many expected the same from the TMC chief. However, Banerjee instead left for the counting centre at Shekhawat. She also accused the EC of saying votes were looted and claimed that the BJP’s victory was unjust and that about 100 seats were stolen.
Mamata reiterated her stance on Tuesday saying that her fight was with the poll body and not against the BJP. She also maintains that the TMC did not truly lose the elections and in a defying statement said that she will not resign. She also said that the TMC would continue to challenge what it sees as an unfair process, ABP reported.
Political critics have already raised questions asking if Banerjee is planning to take another path and maybe approach the court regarding her complaints.
However, it is impossible to tell if any action will be taken by the Raj Bhavan if she does not resign as per procedure.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan submitted his resignation to Governer Rajendra V Arlekar just hours after the CPI(M) lost the elections to the UDF in Kerala.
The letter ended the Vjayan’s decade-long tenure as the longest-serving Chief Minister in the state.
DMK President M.K. Stalin also resigned as Chief Minister on Tuesday after the results, by sending a letter to Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at the Raj Bhavan. They were requested to continue in office till new arrangements have been made.
