BrahMos missile
Vietnamese President To Lam is on a visit to India this week and will be a part of many important meetings in New Delhi. It is believed that during this period there will be talks to further strengthen defense cooperation between India and Vietnam. Especially the discussions are intense regarding the possible deal for BrahMos missile.
Focus on purchasing BrahMos missile
According to sources, Vietnam is showing interest in purchasing BrahMos supersonic cruise missile developed by India-Russia joint project BrahMos Aerospace. If this agreement is signed, its price could be around Rs 60 billion, which will also include training and logistics support. However, the chances of signing any major defense deal during this tour are said to be low.
Important partnership in Indo-Pacific strategy
For India, Vietnam is considered an important ally in the Indo-Pacific region. In view of China's increasing influence, India is emphasizing on strengthening its strategic relationships in this region. In such a situation, increasing defense cooperation with Vietnam is part of India's larger strategy.
Defense relations have increased earlier also
India has already sold BrahMos missile to Philippines and has also signed a defense agreement with Indonesia. Apart from this, India has also been helping in training the Vietnamese army. In the year 2023, India also gifted an indigenous missile corvette named Kirpan to Vietnam, which has further strengthened the defense relations between the two countries.
Strength in trade and diplomacy too
Apart from defence, trade relations between India and Vietnam are also growing rapidly. In the last financial year, trade between the two countries was more than 16 billion dollars. Both countries are continuously trying to further advance economic and strategic cooperation.
What next?
This visit of President Lam can give a new direction to the relations between the two countries. Even if no big deal is struck immediately, there is every possibility that defense and trade cooperation between India and Vietnam will deepen in the future.
