Key Points

  • A USDA alert warns of undeclared shellfish allergens in Giovanni Rana ravioli sold at Costco.
  • The mislabeled ravioli may contain shrimp and lobster, posing risks for those allergic to shellfish.
  • Consumers should check for affected packages and discard or return to Costco for safety.

There’s a public health alert on a refrigerated pasta product sold at select Costco locations, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). This is due to misbranding and undeclared allergens.

The pasta affected by this alert is 32-ounce packages of Giovanni Rana Rustic Beef Sauce & Creamy Burrata Cheese Ravioli. The impacted packaging contains use-by dates ranging from May 14 through June 25, 2026, and they have a printed establishment number of “44870” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The ravioli was sold at Costco locations in Maryland and New Jersey. A recall was not requested since the product is no longer being sold, but consumers should still check their refrigerators for this packaged product and dispose of it or return to their place of purchase if they have it on hand.

“The ravioli labeled as beef and burrata may actually contain shrimp filling in lobster sauce,” the USDA notes in the announcement, stating that this discovery follows two consumer complaints. “The shrimp and lobster, known allergens (shellfish), are not declared on the product label.”

Those with a shellfish allergy may unknowingly consume this product and experience a reaction as severe as anaphylaxis. While there are no allergy reports connected with this alert, seek immediate medical attention if you are showing symptoms like hives, nausea, stomach cramps, headaches, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, tightness of the throat or trouble breathing.
