The University of Nottingham is all set to take part in a trial to test a new vaccine for bird flu. This vaccine is meant to protect people from getting the bird flu virus. The University of Nottingham is one of the places where this trial is happening.

Experts are worried that the virus might change and start spreading more easily in the future. Prof David Turner from the University of Nottingham says that bird flu is one of the threats for the next big disease outbreak. He says that we do not know when the bird flu virus might start spreading to people.


The vaccine being tested is for the H5N1 bird flu strain. This strain of the bird flu virus has already killed a lot of birds. Has also infected some mammals. The vaccine uses the technology that was used to make the COVID-19 vaccine. Scientists like this technology because it lets them make a lot of vaccine doses quickly if they need to.


The H5N1 bird flu strain is a threat to people and animals in the area around Nottingham. Some farms in Nottinghamshire have already had to kill all their birds because of the bird flu virus. Around the world 116 people have gotten the bird flu virus since 2024. Almost all of these people got the virus from touching animals. The University of Nottingham and other researchers want to make sure they have a vaccine that works before the bird flu virus starts spreading from person to person.


The University of Nottingham is one of 26 places in the UK where this trial is happening. The trial will have, around 3,000 adult volunteers. The main goal is to see if the vaccine is safe and if it can help peoples bodies fight the bird flu virus. If the vaccine works it could be approved for use. The UK will be ready to protect its people from the bird flu virus.
