Guwahati, May 5: The Bharatiya Janata Party has designated J. P. Nadda as its central observer for the election of the legislative party leader in Assam, initiating the formal process to establish the next government following the NDA's significant victory.
Haryana's Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini will assist as co-observer during this process, as per the party's announcement.
This decision comes shortly after the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance achieved a remarkable win in Assam, securing 102 out of 126 Assembly seats.
The BJP itself claimed 82 seats, positioning it to govern for a third consecutive term.
Earlier today, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma convened a strategic meeting at his residence, which included Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia and senior leaders from NDA ally Asom Gana Parishad, such as Atul Bora and Keshab Mahanta.
Sources indicate that Sarma is expected to meet with Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya later today to submit his resignation and assert his claim to form the new government.
The Chief Minister has also suggested that the timing of the oath-taking ceremony may depend on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's availability.
“This time, the Assam BJP unit would prefer his presence. If his visit is confirmed, we will finalize the oath-taking dates accordingly. Therefore, we might take an additional two to three days for discussions regarding the ceremony,” Sarma stated on Monday evening.
Earlier, after the party surpassed the majority threshold on Monday evening, Modi addressed party members at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi, calling the outcome a validation of governance and service delivery.
Emphasizing a cultural connection, he associated the victory with Assam’s spiritual heritage. “With Ganga ji, we have also been blessed by Brahmaputra and Ma Kamakhya. This is why we have achieved a hat-trick in Assam,” the Prime Minister remarked.
With the legislative party meeting now scheduled to confirm leadership, the BJP is anticipated to act quickly in forming the government in Dispur, marking its third consecutive term in power.
In West Bengal, the BJP has appointed Amit Shah as the central observer and Mohan Charan Majhi as co-observer to manage the election of the party’s legislative leader.
