Manchester Airport travellers faced early morning chaos after a police pursuit ended in a crash near Terminal 2 and a driver was taken to hospital. The upper forecourt of the terminal was forced to close for three hours following a crash in the early hours of today (May 5).
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said the driver of a vehicle being pursued by officers was taken to hospital with serious injuries following the collision. In a post online at 2.30am this morning, a GMP spokesperson said: "Following a police pursuit, a road traffic collision occurred close to Terminal 2 at Manchester Airport.
"The driver of the vehicle has been taken to hospital with serious injuries. Due to the location of the collision, disruption is expected for airport passengers." Manchester Airport confirmed the upper forecourt had reopened by 5.30am.
Passengers were warned to expect disruption heading to Terminal 2, which is now Manchester Airport's main terminal for all departures except Ryanair. In a post on social media earlier this morning, a Manchester Airport spokesperson said: "Please be aware: due to a road traffic collision, the upper forecourt of Terminal 2 is closed until further notice.
"All drivers are being redirected to the lower forecourt. As a result, congestion on the site is expected and journeys are likely to take longer than normal. We apologise for any inconvenience."
An online post from the airport read: "The upper forecourt at Terminal 2 has reopened following the earlier road traffic collision. We thank people for their patience and apologise for any delays."
