OYO Rooms has gained immense popularity among couples since its inception in 2013. In just eight years, the company has achieved a staggering business valuation of ₹75,000 crores, founded by Ritesh Agarwal. Once, Ritesh had only ₹30 in his pocket, and his first startup, Oravel Stays, faced a significant setback. Despite the uncertainty in his career, he managed to establish a major brand like OYO Rooms. So, how did OYO become such a prominent name in the hospitality industry? Let's explore.
Born in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, Ritesh Agarwal aspired to be an entrepreneur from a young age. At the insistence of his family, he moved to Kota to prepare for the IIT entrance exams, but he struggled to focus on his studies. This led him to embark on a journey across various hotels, where he would request to stay for free, claiming he wanted to solve a significant problem in the hotel industry. Some hotel owners offered him discounts, while others turned him away.
During his travels, Ritesh stayed in around 200 hotels across 100 locations, identifying the major issues within the hotel sector. In 2012, he launched Oravel Stays, where he aimed to enhance the appearance and feel of budget hotels while also helping them find customers. However, this venture did not succeed, leaving him with only ₹30. He found himself contemplating his future in Delhi's bustling market.
In 2013, Ritesh was selected for the Thiel Fellowship, which provided him with $100,000 (approximately ₹75 lakhs). This was the same year he founded OYO Rooms, which connected budget hotels with better branding, marketing, technology support, customer management, and improved aesthetics. As a result, hotel owners saw their business double, leading to increased funding for OYO.
OYO adopted a strategy focusing on location, quality, and price, partnering with existing hotels rather than building new ones. They streamlined hotel searches, simplified booking processes, and ensured smooth check-ins and check-outs, enhancing customer satisfaction. This aggregator business model utilized technology to facilitate operations for both customers and partners, allowing room bookings in just three clicks and five seconds. OYO also invested heavily in training existing staff.
OYO continuously adapted its strategies to meet market needs. For instance, recognizing the challenges couples faced in finding rooms, OYO promoted itself as a couple-friendly hotel option. Today, OYO Rooms operates in 800 cities across 80 countries, making Ritesh Agarwal the second youngest self-made billionaire in the world.
Currently, OYO Rooms is in the spotlight due to its upcoming IPO, which is expected to be filed next week. Reports suggest that the company may issue an IPO worth around ₹8,000 crores by the end of 2021. OYO currently holds 68% of the market share in India, and according to the Hurun Rich List 2020, Ritesh Agarwal's net worth is approximately ₹7,000 crores. In the future, OYO Rooms plans to expand into hospitality-related businesses such as OYO Townhall, OYO Weddings, and OYO Workspace.
