Sydney Sixers signs Punjab Kings staff as head coach for the upcoming BBL season
Cricket Gully | May 5, 2026 2:39 AM CST

Former Australia all-rounder and current Punjab Kings bowling coach, James Hopes has been appointed head coach of Sydney Sixers on a two-year contract, marking his first assignment in a top role. The announcement comes, prompting a change in leadership following the departure of Greg Shipperd.

Hopes, 47, transitions from assistant coaching duties, most recently serving as bowling coach with Punjab Kings in IPL 2026. The Sixers, one of the most consistent teams in the tournament’s history with three titles, now move to a structure led by a coach without prior head coaching experience but with extensive franchise exposure.

Notably, Hopes’ international playing career includes 84 ODIs and 12 T20Is for Australia, with his last appearance coming in 2010.

Transition follows BBL final result

Sydney Sixers concluded the latest BBL season as runners-up after losing the final to Perth Scorchers by nine wickets. The result ended Shipperd’s tenure, during which the team maintained consistent playoff appearances.

Hopes’ involvement in franchise cricket has largely been in specialist roles, particularly overseeing bowling units. His current association with Punjab Kings has coincided with the team leading the IPL 2026 points table with 13 points from nine matches, despite a recent dip in results after an unbeaten start.

The bowling unit under Hopes has shown variation in performance, adapting to different conditions while also facing challenges on high-scoring surfaces. Tactical changes, including personnel adjustments and emphasis on spin options, have been part of the approach during the season.

Statements reflect continuity and expectations

Meanwhile, Hopes expressed his gratitude for the opportunity with Sydney Sixers. Hopes said,

"I'm incredibly honoured to join the Sydney Sixers, a club with a proud history and a strong identity built on consistency, competitiveness and connection with its fans. I'm excited to work with a talented playing group and contribute to the next phase of the Sixers' success in the BBL."

The Sixers’ decision aligns with a broader trend of franchises appointing coaches with recent league exposure. Hopes’ familiarity with player management in short-format competitions is expected to be central to his role.

With Punjab Kings continuing their IPL campaign and the Sixers preparing for the next BBL cycle, the appointment reflects a transition that prioritises recent tactical involvement over established head coaching credentials.
