Explained! Why Hardik Pandya is not leading Mumbai Indians against LSG in IPL 2026

New Delhi: Hardik Pandya was not part of the playing XI as Suryakumar Yadav replaced him as captain in the Mumbai Indians’ (MI) clash against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 on Monday, May 04. Suryakumar came out for the toss for MI against LSG at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Suryakumar revealed at the toss that Hardik had to miss out due to not being well. Hardik has been under immense pressure in the ongoing season amid his team’s woeful run in IPL 2026. The star all-rounder has struggled with his form with the bat and has failed to inspire his troops as a leader.

“He’s (Hardik) not well tonight, so just going into his shoes. But yeah, the rest, everything is fine,” said Suryakumar when asked about Hardik’s absence against LSG.

Mumbai Indians later confirmed that Hardik is missing the game due to back spasms. This is not the first time the star all-rounder has missed a game in the IPL 2026. Suryakumar had stepped up to lead the five-time champions when Hardik missed MI’s clash against the Delhi Capitals at the Wankhede Stadium earlier this season.
