In Kolkata, the BJP has claimed victory in six seats and is currently leading in 196 others as the vote counting for the West Bengal Assembly elections continues. This trend suggests a significant rise for the BJP in the region.
As per the Election Commission's updates, the BJP has successfully won seats in Kalimpong, Darjeeling, Monteswar, Bhatar, Medinipur, and Asansol Dakshin.
Bharat Kumar Chetri triumphed in Kalimpong with a margin of 21,464 votes, while Saikat Panja won Monteswar in Purba Bardhaman district by 14,798 votes. Karfa Soumen also secured Bhatar with a margin of 6,528 votes, and Angimitra Paul led in Asansol Dakshin by 40,839 votes. Sankar Kumar Guchhait won in Medinipur by 38,747 votes, and Noman Rai took Darjeeling with a margin of 6,057 votes.
Rai's victory came against Bijoy Kumar Rai of the Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha, marking a continuation of BJP's success in Darjeeling from previous elections.
Conversely, the TMC managed to retain the Bhagawangola seat in Murshidabad district, where Reyat Hossain Sarkar defeated his closest rival by a substantial margin of 56,407 votes. The party is currently leading in 87 additional seats.
However, reports from within the TMC indicate that at least 23 ministers are trailing in various constituencies, posing a significant challenge for the party's leadership.
Notable leaders such as outgoing Education Minister Bratya Basu are trailing by 10,521 votes, while others like Manas Ranjan Bhunia, Shashi Panja, and Chandrima Bhattacharya are also behind their competitors.
In Singur, BJP candidate Arup Kumar Das is ahead by 4,924 votes against TMC's Becharam Manna, which is a critical setback for the ruling party in this key constituency.
Minister Snehasis Chakraborty is trailing by approximately 6,500 votes, with several other ministers, including Sujit Bose and Pulak Roy, also lagging behind.
This electoral trend is particularly noteworthy as the Mamata Banerjee-led government has heavily relied on its welfare initiatives and strong local leadership, with many of these figures being crucial to governance at the grassroots level.
The counting process is crucial in determining the future composition of the 294-member assembly, with votes being counted in 293 seats, as polling in Falta, South 24 Parganas district, was canceled by the Election Commission.
