West Bengal 2026: BJP's 5 Powerful Women Leaders — Will the Party Play the 'Woman CM' Card Against Mamata?
Webdunia | May 4, 2026 8:40 PM CST

Early trends in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections indicate a historic turning point for the BJP. In the 294-member Assembly, the party appears to have crossed the majority mark of 148 seats, and a key factor behind this surge has been the strong performance of its women candidates.

It wouldn’t be surprising if the BJP considers appointing a woman Chief Minister in the state—especially to counter Mamata Banerjee’s long-standing dominance. After experimenting with leadership changes in other states, the party could deploy a similar strategy here. Names like Agnimitra Paul, Locket Chatterjee, Soma Thakur, and Roopa Ganguly can be discussed.

‘Mamata Card’ vs ‘Nari Shakti’ Strategy

To counter Mamata Banerjee’s welfare-driven appeal—especially schemes like Lakshmi Bhandar—BJP’s women leaders highlighted central initiatives such as Ujjwala Yojana and the Women’s Reservation Bill (Nari Shakti Vandan Act).

Their messaging focused on empowerment beyond financial aid—emphasising women’s participation in decision-making and leadership.

Diverse Representation in Ticket Distribution

The BJP fielded women candidates from varied social backgrounds this time. Leaders from communities like Matua, Rajbanshi, and tribal regions played a crucial role in consolidating votes in their respective areas, giving the party a wider social reach.

‘Nari Shakti’ as a Political Weapon

Women have always played a decisive role in Bengal politics, but this election saw the BJP aggressively position “Nari Shakti” at the centre of its campaign. This strategy helped the party make inroads into what was traditionally seen as Mamata Banerjee’s strong women voter base.
