Manipal: The Shimbra bridge, an important link connecting Manipal and Kolalagiri, has become a major concern for the public due to rising illegal activities and poor maintenance. Local residents say the situation has worsened to the point that people are afraid to use the bridge after evening hours.
Streetlights on the bridge have been non-functional for several months. Taking advantage of the darkness, miscreants and alcoholics have reportedly turned the bridge into a gathering spot. Vehicles are often parked randomly on the bridge, and people consume alcohol, causing inconvenience to commuters.
The area in and around the bridge is also facing cleanliness issues. Empty liquor bottles, plastic waste, and garbage are scattered, creating an unhygienic environment.
Bridge in poor condition
Though the bridge was built years ago, it has not been officially inaugurated yet. Parts of the concrete surface have worn out, exposing iron rods in some places. A large pipeline related to the Varahi drinking water project has been installed near the bridge. However, soil, large bags, and pipes used during construction have been left in the river, obstructing the natural flow of water.
During summer, saltwater enters the river, which has reportedly weakened the base of the bridge pillars. The accumulation of soil under the bridge is also affecting water flow.
Demand for immediate action
Due to lack of lighting, illegal activities on the bridge have increased, raising safety concerns for women and senior citizens. Locals have demanded immediate repair of streetlights, installation of CCTV cameras, and increased police patrolling.
Delay in clearing construction materials
Officials said that removal of construction debris, including soil and large pipes placed during the pipeline work, has been delayed due to Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) restrictions. An application has been submitted by the Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC) to obtain permission, and approval is expected soon, said municipal commissioner Mahantesh Hangaragi.
