Indian Railways Rules: During long-distance journeys, people often find it preferable to travel at night because, after falling asleep, they often do not even realize when they have reached their destination. Conversely, traveling during the day can make the journey feel excessively long. However, if you, too, prefer traveling at night, it is vital to be aware of certain key regulations. Ignoring these rules could lead to disciplinary action by the railways, and in many instances, result in the imposition of fines. Maintaining peace and quiet within the train is the responsibility of all passengers, ensuring that everyone enjoys a comfortable journey.

1. Speaking loudly on the phone is prohibited

If you speak loudly on your mobile phone while on the train at night, it disturbs the sleep of other passengers. Furthermore, if a fellow passenger files a complaint against you, disciplinary action may be initiated.

2. Ban on loudspeakers and loud music

Please note that playing music on loudspeakers within the train during night hours is strictly prohibited.
Additionally, playing videos at high volume is also considered a violation of the regulations.
Therefore, you should always use earphones during your journey to ensure that other passengers are not subjected to any form of disturbance.

3. Use only the night lights

At night, the main lights in the train coaches are switched off to allow all passengers to sleep peacefully; only the designated night lights remain illuminated.

4. The 'Middle Berth' Rule after 10:00 PM

After 10:00 PM, if a passenger occupying the middle berth wishes to sleep, the passenger occupying the lower berth must not prevent them from accessing their seat. This is an official railway regulation, and strict adherence to it is mandatory.

5. Know the Rules for Ticket Checking at Night

According to railway regulations, Ticket Examiners (TTEs) generally do not check tickets between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM; however, if a passenger boards the train after 10:00 PM, their ticket may be checked.

6. Exercise Caution When Ordering Food at Night

Ordering food online after 10:00 PM can often be challenging, as deliveries may not arrive on time. Therefore, it is advisable to pre-order your meals in advance through e-catering services. Remember that during night travel, paying attention to these small rules can significantly enhance your comfort; thus, they should not be overlooked.
